Glasshouses may protect ornamentals from the weather, but they are also a breeding ground for whitefly. There are as many as 1,600 species of whitefly in the world, but there are only two of economic importance to the UK. The most familiar example togrowers of protected ornamentals is the glasshouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum. Although originating from countries with warmer climates than here, this species is well suited to the environment found in glasshouses and polytunnels, which is whyit can be a severe pest in those conditions if it is left unchecked. Biological control of whitefly centres on Encarsia formosa. Other natural enemies mciudethe beetle Delphastus pusillus, best used to reduce hot spots where Encarsia is losing the upperhand, and Eretmocerus eremicus.
