Historic and botanic gardens were hit hard by the poor weather in 2012, reducing visitor numbers and making garden maintenance projects more difficult. Going into 2013, gardeners are continuing to struggle with problems caused by wet conditions. Gardeans in many areas of the country are having to cope with saturated grounds, making work difficult to complete and giving rise to fears about further problems to come, such as turf damage, moss growth and algae on hard surfaces.Saltram House in Devon is one garden suffering from saturated ground. Head gardener Penny Hammond explains that the unusually wet conditions mean the gardening team is unable to carry out routine work.
