Sleeping in the undergrowth for four hundred years, a garden which was created as the Tudors were slipping into history lay like an enchanted princess waiting to be brought back to life. The prince who delivered the necessary kiss was the National Trust, but while Snow White, Briar Rose and Sleeping Beauty are good names on which to hang a fairy tale, New Bield is not. The antiquarian spelling is puzzling, and many of us have had bad experiences with new buildings. Lyveden, the name of the property,has more resonance (it is pronounced as if alive and not as if leaving), and this particular new building is as eccentric as its name, not new at all but a rare survival from the first age of garden follies and banqueting houses. Sir Thomas Tresham, itscreator, called it 'my garden lodge' and placed it on the highest eminence of his land, commanding spectacular views across the Northamptonshire landscape rolling gently southwards towards the hunting grounds of Rockingham Forest. To the east and west lay pastures full of lucrative sheep that Tresham had ruthlessly enclosed, driving out the local tenants as was the way of Tudor gentry; and in the valley to the north nestled the Old Bield, Tresham's manor house at Lyveden (one wing of which survies), andthe deer park beyond. TThe garden with its terraces and canals streches now, as it did then, up the slope between the Old Bield and the Now. Your sense of entering a magie space will intensify if you should chance to arrive as grey wisps form a distantbonfire and the faint scent of woood-smoke drift through the trees.
