County Wicklow - south of Dublin and facing east towards Wales over the Irish Sea - has the reputation of being the Garden of Ireland. Not quite like Kent for its orchards and hop fields, nor like the Cotswolds for the foreshortened scale (and, of course, the sheer prettiness) of its landscapes, nor even like the Vale of Evesham for its apple and plum blossom. Wicklow is the Garden of Ireland just because it has quite a lot of them - gardens, that is. When it isn't gardens, it's woods and steep streams, and some pretty wild hills and mountains. John Millington Synge's favourite (very long) walk out of Dublin was to Glencree, and his 1903 one-act play The Shadow of the Glen is set in Wicklow. Edward Lear said it was the Wicklow Mountains that spurredhim to be 'a painter of topographical landscapes' (so what, one wonders incidentally, was the spur that made him the unrivalled master of those short poems? And you can't answer Limerick.) The county has its celebrated beauty spots - the Sugar Loaf Mountain, Glendalough, the Vale of Avoca - the last of which is the setting for Tom Moore's poem 'Meeting of the Waters' and really he and the song, making it famous, did for the place, but the others are well worth the visiting.
