On a sunny and bright but exceedingly cold late January morning I donned several layers of warm clothing and headed off for my very first seed exchange event. The third Seedy Saturday was held at Southover Grange in Lewes, the county town of East Sussex. The Grange is a fine Elizabethan house, now home to the local registry office. Its lovely two-acre garden provides an attractive backdrop to many a post-nuptial photograph but on this frosty morning I found marquees bedecked with robust gardening paraphernalia and not a bride in view. The site has some interesting gardening credentials; the diarist and tree enthusiast John Evelyn (1620—1706) lived here as a boy and the great Sussex gardener William Robinson (1838—1935) is known to have visited. Robinson came here in 1903, a particularly colourful period in the history of the house. At this time it was the home of the innovative English harpsichord player Violet Gordon-Woodhouse (1872 —1951) and her cosy menage a trois consisting of her husband,confusingly named Gordon Gordon-Woodhouse, and William Shute Barrington, tenth Viscount Barrington.
