When Betty Kershaw died in April she was supposedly ninety years old. That was nonsense, of course: she was forty-five at most. Certainly in terms of the impression she gave, she was almost to the end of her life a woman in energetic middle age ratherthan in eventide decline. (Equally certainly, I know many actual forty-five-year-olds with far less energy, both physical and mental, than Betty had in her eighties.) What's more, little if any of her formidable energy was ever wasted, because she was awoman of equally formidable focus. When she had plans for her garden (and she had many), she carried them through. When she had ideas or lines of research she wanted to pursue (and she had many), she hunted them down relentlessly, if need be across national and linguistic boundaries. On paper I was a generation or more her junior but I vividly remember some years ago recklessly volunteering to spend a day helping her weed out from her garden that attractive thug, Geraniumprocurrens, by whose deceivingcharms we had both been seduced. (I'm not sure I didn't volunteer out of guilt. I may well have been the sinner who had introduced her to it or it to her.) After several hours on hands and knees in baking sun I was exhausted, but Betty was still grimly pressing on. As far as she was concerned, you only stopped when a job was finished.
