Plant names are in two parts and very often the second part, the species, gives some clue as to the character of the plant. For example, grandiflora, sempervirens, quadrifolius — large flowered, evergreen and four-leafed respectively. Many of the descriptive specific epithets are not always so obvious or may only seem obvious when you read the name; but when you look at the plant you start to wonder where on earth the name came from. You might expect to see a hairy plant when you seepilosus after the genus, but it is not always that straightforward: that hairiness might be on an obscure part of the flower but is a feature which is crucial in differentiating it from another similar species which either lacks the hairiness, or has hairs, but shorterthan the ones on this plant. I have always thought that names of the different genera were more a reflection of the names of great botanists or public figures, such as Begon, Governor of French Canada who was a patron of botany and for which the genus Begonia was named, or Mathias de l'Obel, who gave us Lobelia. There is a long list of these well-known plants: davidia, buddleja, nicotiana, tradescantia, montbretia, strelitzia and camellia are all named for great dignitaries and scientists of history. However, the more you poke around among generic names, the more you findthat are just like the specific names, describing some physical feature of the plant that may be obvious or obscure, and that brings us to Anomatheca laxa.
