Two grandes dames of botanical art have died recently: Mary Grierson (27 September 1912—30 January 2012) aged ninety-nine and Beryl Walden (8 January 1927-1 August 2011) aged eighty-four.Although both women were distinguished in their field their lives were very different. Mary Grierson, having escaped from the sensible career in catering that her mother had planned for her, took a post at the start of the war with the photographic Reconnaissance Unit at Medenham on the Thames, followed by a job with an aerial survey firm. Making maps from aerial photographs rekindled her early desire to paint. That work, and the discovery of the rich flora around her in the Chilterns, encouraged her topaint a wild Pulsatilla she found growing there. 'Very badly', was how she described her effort, but she had loved doing it. By chance she read of the courses in botanical illustration at Flatford Mill in Essex taken by John Nash, and subsequently she attended several of them. What luck! Nash, a fine plantsman, draughtsman and painter, was a kind and encouraging tutor.
