In a (British) summer dogged by seemingly seemless low clouds and high rainfall and — in my own case — long absences from home, I was delighted by a floriferous patch of rural England that had sprouted in London's West End. More elevated furrow than patch, the object of my obsession (it almost became an obsession, as on several occasions I made detours for yet further brief encounters) was a window box. Obviously no ordinary window box.
