Australian Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, mother of global media tycoon Rupert, died at her home Cruden Farm, Langwarrin, on the outskirts of Melbourne, on 6 December 2012. She had lived and gardened there for a remarkable eighty-four years.In 1928, aged nineteen, she married Keith Murdoch, newspaper proprietor and editor; he was twenty-four years her senior and Melbourne society is said to have been puzzled at the unlikely match between the young Elisabeth and the city's most eligible bachelor. Later in life, Dame Elisabeth said, 'It was the best thing I ever did'. They had four children, Helen, (who predeceased her), Rupert, Anne and Janet. At her memorial service, the eighty-two—year-old Rupert recalled how he was smacked by his mother for pulling his sister's pigtails.
