摘要

Marrakesh is a city that seems to divide people on the Marmite Scale — one taste and you either become an aficionado or you never want to go near the place again. Fortunately, few people subscribe to the latter camp and the city has been enjoying a period of exhilarating attention and prosperity as a glamorous tourist destination.Much is being done to nurture this valuable tourist trade, from measures to prevent unpleasant hassling in the souks to the development of fabulously luxurious hotels. Luxury here also means green spaces and there are new parks, gardens and public planting all over the city as part of its plan for 'beautification'. It is an exciting time for garden professionals but some intellectuals are concerned that consumer-driven work is producing design that is largely imported and irrelevant to the life and history of the city They argue that encouraging this kind of cultural one-size-fits-all is short-sighted, inevitably leading to gardenz — the 'green' equiva-lent of muzak — ubiquitous and without value.
