At Gazpromneft's Moscow refinery, the fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) unit had the potential to increase throughput with a catalyst-to-feed mass ratio of 4. A study was conducted using a series of FCC catalysts that included reduced rare-earth (RE) content and increased zeolite Y quantity systems. The goal of the catalyst study was to increase gasoline yield, along with greater yields of olefins (C3 and C4) from the FCC unit, as the catalyst-to-feed mass ratio was steadily reduced from 5.7 to 4.5. During this catalyst evaluation process, no extensive modernization of the existing FCC equipment was required. The main driver for the project was an informed effort to switch from RE catalysts due to rising prices for RE elements. In addition, the study evaluated options regarding zeolite Y modifications and possible zeolite-content increases while decreasing the RE content in the FCC catalyst. This optimization project focused on minimizing capital expenses while simultaneously increasing the unit throughput without changing the catalyst circulation rate.
