摘要

The study area situated on the right bank of the Ganges, the mighty meandering channel on its way to the Bay of Bengal, covers five adjacent villages of Madaripur district of southwest Bangladesh. The area is characterized by the erosion and accretiongame of the Ganges which gives rise to emergence of medium to large size shoals/sand bars (locally known as char). Groundwater development in the study area is comparatively much less than that in other parts of Bangladesh. The main objective of the study was to examine the problems and prospects of groundwater irrigation market in five selected villages in the lower Gangetic floodplain of southwestern part of Bangladesh. The study is based on primary data collected from those villages. The study reveals the fact that the development of groundwater irrigation in this part of the country is not as old as the evolution of the villages. The decade-old groundwater market riddled with problems and prospects is in the offing. The prospects lie with the enormous volume of groundwater resources, while the problems with energy-irrigation nexus and efficient management of this resource. Diesel price hike and non-availability of electricity are the major hindrance in shaping the groundwater market to a mature stage. The groundwater irrigation market can be geared towards poverty alleviation through proper agricultural, credit, subsidies and energy support policies. Sustainable groundwater market will remain a far cry unless demand management mechanisms are developed.
