The Rhaetic sandstone was penetrated by the borehole in Hamburg-Allermoehe drilled to investigate the potential for geothermal energy at that location. This sandstone is cemented with anhydrite and therefore the potential for extraction of geothermal energy is limited. Study of the cementation is important, however, in order to obtain information about the regional distribution of the cementation and about possibilities to stimulate the cemented sandstone horizons. Radiographic as well as x-ray and NMR tomographic methods were developed to study this anhydrite cementation. These methods can be used to nondestructively distinguish individual layers, "islands" of cementation, and interbedding cementation patterns. They permit three-dimensional representation so that changes can be observed as a function of depth. Leaching tests in the laboratory with various fluids sometimes increased the permeability by three orders of magnitude and new flow paths were formed.
