Analytical and numerical calculations are carried out in the hodograph plane to construct optimal critical airfoils. These optimal airfoil shapes give the highest free-stream Mach number M(infinity) for a set of constraints, such as thickness delta and lift coefficient C-l. Results are discussed for both nonlifting and lifting airfoils. Comparisons with standard airfoil shapes show that a significant improvement in M(infinity) is obtained with the optimal shapes.
