On the crystal chemistry of oxometallates of cadmium [Zur Kristallchemie der Oxometallate des Cadmiums]

In oxo/-vanadates, -chromates, -wolframates, -germanates, for example, Cd~(2+) appears as cationic part of the crystal structures and shows mainly octahedral coordination by oxygen. It is amazing that CdMoO4 (Scheelite type) and α-CdUO_4 are containing CdO_8-polyhedra. The first mentioned compound shows distorted two times capped trigonal CdO _(6+2) prisms, in α-CdUO_4 the coordination number eight is realized by CdO_8-cubes. The only one example of sevenfold coordinated Cd~(2+) is CdV_3O_7. The compound CaCd_2Bi_2Nb_4O_(15) shows in the anionic part of the crystal structure Nb_4O_(15) blocks (allocated to the Aurivillius phases). The NbO_6-octahedra network corresponds a yet unknown higher Ruddlesden-Popper phase too. The so called oxocadmates are formed by the large alkaline metals and barium. For example: BaCdO_2; RbCdO_2; K_2Cd_2O_3; K _6CdO_4; Cs_2K_2Cd_3O _5 and Cs_(14)Cd_9O_(16). The compositions generally show metal rich compounds stand out due low coordination numbers of the big alkaline metals. On the other hand the oxygen deficit will lead to the smallest possible tetrahedral coordination of Cd~(2+). Special structural features found in the crystal structure of Cs_(14)Cd _9O_(16) are Cd_9O_(16)-polyhedra blocks. Na_2CdO_2 is no member of the oxocadmates because of the common statistically distribution of large alkali Na~+ and Cd ~(2+) ions at the same point position of oxygen in the Bixbyite (Mn _2O_3) type. Despite the fact that Cs_2K _2Cd_3O_5 is a member of metal rich compounds it shows Cs~+ inside a large extremely deformed CsO_7- polyhedron. Cd_3Bi_(10)O_(20) and CaCd _2Bi_2Nb_4O_(15) are examples of lone pair activity of Bi~(3+). A special feature of Cd_3Bi _(10)O_(20) is the common use of one lone pair coming from two Bi~(3+) ions.
