Johann Friedrich Wilhelm Herbst (b. 1743, d. 1807) published an early treatise on carcinology entitled Versuch einer Naturgeschichte der Krabben und Krebse nebst einer systematischen Beschreibung ihrer verschiedenen Arten in three Bande (= volumes, singular Band) between 1782 and 1804 (Herbst 1782-1790, 1791-1796, 1799-1804; Table 1). Each Band is comprised of four to eight Hefte (= issues or parts; singular Heft) (Table 1). Within each Heft are varying numbers of Bogen (= sheets, corresponding to signatures or gatherings, singular Bogen). The work was published in quarto format, with signature marks appearing every eight pages. The wrapper of each Heft (except Heft 1 of Band 1; Fig. 1 A) lists the plates and Bogen of text it contains (e.g. Fig. IB). Each Heft (except for Hefte 2-3 and Hefte 4-5 of Band 1, see Table 1) was issued individually and the wrapper of each Heft is dated (Fig. 1 A, B).
