This paper discusses concern over exposure of EU consumers to undesirable chemicals in the diet, particularly as regards food contact materials as the contamination source. It outlines a project to provide a novel and economic tool for estimating consumer exposure to chemical migrating from food contact plastic materials by the use of a physicochemical migration model that can mathematically describe the migration processes from plastics into actual foodstuffs under particular contact conditions.
