The propulsion of small and medium-sized boats - be they private, commercial or governmental services vessels - has been developing for more than a century. It started with inboard engines running on gasoline. Later engines were diesel-fueled. Initially, the inboard engines drove fixed propellers. Currently, the sterndrive combines inboard power with outboard drive. In the early years of the 20th century, outboard engines came into use. Currently, they are popular, powerful and generally easier to service and replace than inboard engines or sterndrives. Cimco Marine AB of Sweden has introduced a new diesel-fueled outboard concept purposely designed for the commercial market that combines inboard power with the flexibility and serviceability of an outboard engine. It is now being launched on the U.S. market in collaboration with Cascade Engine Center, Tukwila, Wash.; Laborde Products, Covington, La.; and Mack Boring and Parts Co., Union, N.J. Cimco's patented OXE Diesel S-BPU (self-contained belt propulsor unit) is the first of its kind and opens a new commercial segment on the market, Cimco said. The OXE Diesel S-BPU has a modular platform that consists of a horizontal instead of vertical engine configuration. As a result, the power heads are sourced from the automotive and industrial sector like most inboard solutions. A heavy-duty gearbox and two belts transfer engine power through the drive train.
