摘要

Joseph Priestley, supporter of the French Revolution, controversial clergyman, chemist, inventor of fizzy drinks, and discoverer of several gases, including oxygen, leans toward King George III as if to console him. Prominent politician Charles James Fox, another supporter of the French Revolution, holds an ax over the English king's head, as if in imitation of the French king's execution. At the bottom of the cartoon (not seen here) are the words "The Hopes of the Party Prior to July 14th." Spurred on by the second anniversary of Bastille Day, rioters burned down Priestley's home and laboratory, forcing him to flee. Gillray's sympathies clearly lie with those who opposed the French Revolution and its English supporters.
