The US Army conducted its seventh semiannual Network Integration Evaluation (NIE) during May-June 2014. Designated NIE 14.2, the event represented a continuation of the digital modernisation process that has evaluated more than 170 systems to date, developed and validated the army's Capability Set 13 (CS 13) communications and network architecture now operating with two brigades in Afghanistan, and refined the follow-on CS 14 architecture now being fielded to additional units. Moreover, by providing a venue for soldier-driven evaluations of network technology, the NIEs have supported the early development of tactics, techniques and procedures to optimise the digital network. As with previous events, NIE 14.2 was held at Fort Bliss, Texas, and White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, and featured primary operational elements drawn from the army's 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division (2/1 AD).
