It might seem strange for me to admit this, but it was no picnic to be a dog or cat in my family when I was growing up. We had a series of pets, but I can't recall ever taking them to a veterinarian for even the most basic care. Illnesses like caninedistemper and pan-leukopenia were the norm, even though we didn't know what they were. Treatment was pretty much restricted to providing comfort—once in a while we got lucky and they recovered.
