摘要

Toxoplasma gondii, an obligate single-celled protozoan parasite, continues to be a major zoonotic health concern in human and veterinary medicine because it is capable of infecting any warm-blooded vertebrate intermediate host.As the definitive host, cats are fundamental in the epidemiology of toxoplasmosis. A single cat can excrete millions of oocysts in its feces, and oocysts can survive outdoors for months.1 In the past decade, schizophrenia, a severely debilitating mental illness in humans, has been epidemio-logically linked to T. gondii.2 Given that feral cat colonies are being placed on elementary school campuses in Florida, it is important to know if feral cats are depositing an infectious stage of this parasite into the environment.
