Hydroinertia Gas Bearings and Their Application in High-Speed Microspinners

Conventional externally pressurized hydrostatic gas bearings have such a small-bearing clearance that the viscous effect of gas flow is predominant to the inertia effect. In the case of large-bearing clearance, however, the inertia effect becomes predominant and the gas pressure in the bearing clearance becomes negative. Recently, gas bearings with large clearances are successfully used in ultra high-speed microrotors, for examples, in microspinners of solid nuclear magnetic resonance detectors. In this paper, externally pressurized gas bearings with large clearances are called hydroinertia gas bearings, and their static and dynamic performance is analyzed. Microspinners 4 mm in diameter supported by hydroinertia gas bearings are stably operated more than 20 krps.
