摘要

In this article, I will cover two techniques, one with which I have much experience (viewing of liquid specimens) and the other very little (microtoming), both of which should be used more in coatings research and problem solving. I will begin with the examination of liquids. See JCT CoatingsTech, 4 (8), 72 (2007) for explanations of different types of microscopy and illumination. Paint problems such as rub-up, kick-out, flow problems, and surface defects raise questions about the quality and stability of the liquid paint and its components. Transmitted light microscopy at 200-500X is an excellent way to look at liquid paints, pigment dispersions, resins, and latexes and is particularly useful for problem solving with waterborne paints.
