摘要

Autophagy is highly conserved machinery that plays a critical role in the removal of damaged cytoplasmic proteins and intracellular organelles. Autophagy involves the sequestration of cytoplasmic material by an isolation membrane to form a double-membrane vacuole, the autophagosome. An autophagosome is delivered to the lysosome by fusion to form the autolysosome in which the sequestered material is degraded. The principal role of autophagy is to supply nutrients for survival, but it also has a causative role in cell death. The genetic deletion of autopha-gic genes, such as Atg5 (autophagy-related 5) or Atg7 (autophagy-related 7) accelerates rather than inhibits cell death, which suggests a predominant survival role of autophagy.
