On the possible effects of water-soluble organic aerosol constituents on cloud formation

The role of organic compounds in cloud formation (and thereby in indirect aerosol forcing)has received particular attention in the past few years.It has been shown that in addition to inorganic salts organic aerosol particles can also act as cloud condensation nuclei.However,while the inorganic content of the fine aerosol is dominated by a few ionic species,the carbonaceous matter is composed of thousands of organic compounds the majority of which are unknown.Our knowledge on the water-soluble organic aerosol constituents is even more limited due to the methodological difficulties in their analysis.On the other hand,these compounds seem to play an important role in cloud formation.Kohler theory,which was originally developed to describe the activation of an aerosol particle consisting of a water-soluble inorganic salt,is also used to evaluate the role of organic constituents.However,the complexity of the internally mixed aerosol particles (containing both organic and inorganic constituents)raises serious problems in the elucidation of the properties of a nucleating cloud droplet.Contradictory experimental results revealed that the outcome of the model calculation was extremely sensitive to input parameters such as the chemical composition of the aerosol,the properties of the organic components (e.g.molecular weight,van't Hoff factor)and the properties of the growing droplet (e.g.surface tension,osmotic coefficient)which are influenced by both organic and inorganic constituents.
