Systematic review and meta-analysis conclusions relating to osteopathic manipulative treatment for low back pain remain valid and well accepted
It is fascinating to read the critical review (Franke, 2012) of our seminal systematic review and meta-analysis (SRAAA) of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) for low back pain, seven years after its original publication (Licciardone et al., 2005). During this interim period, evolving standards of evidence have been established and are included in Franke's review. Nevertheless, the first and only clinical practice guidelines established by the American Osteopathic Association are essentially based on our SRAAA (Clinical Guideline Subcommittee on Low Back Pain, 2010). These low back pain guidelines have also been accepted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and are posted on its web site (National Guideline Clearinghouse, 2010), as well as on the National Institutes of Health -National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine web site (National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, 2011). Such postings indicate further acceptance of our SRMA data that underlie the low back pain guidelines.
