Calculating the 2-D motion of lumbar vertebrae using splines

A recently published article (McCane et al., 2006) presented a new protocol to determine sagittal plane segmental rotational motion from plane views of the lumbar spine taken in flexion and extension. Independently in each lateral view, contours of the vertebral bodies were represented by splines. The pairs of splines from both views were then matched by an iterative procedure so that relative rotation of the vertebrae could be calculated in a third step. From an in vitro study, the authors determined an error of the rotational motion measurement of 0.44 + 0.45? this error being lower than the respective error obtained by previous protocols, specifically by Distortion Compensated Roentgen Analysis (DCRA: Brinckmann et al., 1994; Frobin et al., 1996). While McCane and colleagues present an ingenious method to represent a plane shape by closed splines and to match splines with different parameterizations, we wish to point to the conceptual problems of their approach when taking measurements of vertebral contours from conventional, clinical radiographs.#1 Dollars 1001N200307031Dollars 1200
