The supply chain was an exotic notion of interest mainly to business school professors as recently as a decade ago. Then something happened. A marker for the sea change might well be the formation of the World Trade Organization in 1995. With globalization came an intensity of worldwide competition never before witnessed, amped up on steroids by the Internet. Industrial processes that had survived throughout the 20th century, which for shorthand purposes might be called 'the General Motors Approach/ were rendered suspect in a frighteningly short number of years. In this changing context, with the 'China price' whittling away historic domestic margins, enterprises faced a stark reality: change or die. No change has been more significant in this turbulence than the threshold leap that transformed logistics from a relatively mundane cost center into the much more expansive end-to-end supply chain, which is now regarded in enlightened business circles as not only a company asset but a core competitive differentiator.
