BACKGROUND: Hydrocarbon degradation by algal-bacterial systems has advantages over degradation by conventional heterotrophic systems. However, oily wastewaters often contain co-contaminants that may inhibit the degradation of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH), leading to system failure.
