An advertisement for a recent symposium sponsored bythe ACS stated, "The teaching of quantum mechanics is oneof the most challenging instructional problems facing chemicaleducators" (1). Quantum mechanics is important in high schoolchemistry because quantization of energies in atoms is essential toa mechanistic explanation of periodicity seen in properties of ele-ments. The story of chemical behavior in general would likely bea very different one if energy levels were not quantized. Quantummechanics is also becoming increasingly important in understand-ing new technologies, such as photoelectric sensors, solar cells,lasers, quantum computers, and light emitting diodes (LEDs).
