A 71-year-old male patient, with no significant past medical history, during coitus, developed the sudden onset of amnesia for all events that had occurred in the last few days. He arose from his bed and walked to the bathroom in a confused state and kept repeatedly questioning his wife. He cut himself shaving but could not recall this. He subsequently was unable to form any new memories and developed anterograde amnesia for all events that occurred over the next 6 to 12 hours.On review in the Emergency Department, he was afebrile. No muscle twitching or jerking, automatisms, olfactory or auditory hallucinations, vertigo, nausea or vomiting or psychic phenomena occurred to suggest complex partial seizures. The neurologic and general examination was normal. The patient's memory returned gradually over the next several hours.
