Candida albicans is one of the fungal species chiefly responsible for cases of superficial and systemic candidiasis [1 ]. We previously demonstrated that C. albicans was able to produce a secreted aspartic proteinase when the cells were cultivated in a medium containing human stratum corneum as a nitrogen source [2-4]. Secreted aspartic proteinases (SAPs) from C. albicans are encoded by a family of 10 SAP genes [5]. SAP 1-3 are expressed in the yeast forms; SAP 4-6 in the hypal forms; SAP 7 in a mouse model of intravenous infection; and SAP 8 transiently in yeast and epithelial models. SAP 9 and 10 encode glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchoring domains [6]. Among these, SAP 2 is the most abundantly secreted protein in vitro when the organism is grown in the presence of protein as the sole source of nitrogen [7]. In this study, we examined whether SAP from C albicans has a chemotactic activity for neutrophils which would induce the host's reaction to candidiasis.
