Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease that involves approximately 2% of the population in Western countries. Not infrequently, psoriatic skin disease is accompanied by other inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, the metabolic syndrome and inflammatory bowel disease. It is not yet clear whether these comorbidities are completely separate entities or, rather, different expressions of a common systemic inflammatory process (reviewed by Davidovici et al. [1]). Ample evidence exists that T cells play an important role in disease pathogenesis, at least in the plaque type. In fact, lesional psoriatic skin harbors sizeable numbers of CD3~+ cells most of which belong to the memory/ effector subset and express the skin-homing molecule CLA (cutaneous lymphocyte antigen) [2,3].
