Primary Children's Medical Center (PCMC) is a 271-bed tertiary care pediatric hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, that serves children in the Intermoun-tain West (Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada). The emergency department is a 35-bed unit that treats approximately 45,000 children yearly. In 2001 PCMC was in the process of obtaining its certification as a level I trauma center from the American College of Surgeons. We believed that a group of experienced nurses from the emergency department was needed to work with the trauma coordinator and other members of our trauma team (Table). This core group of nurses would know the equipment in the trauma room, which laboratory tests should be obtained for trauma patients, and the trauma "process" from arrival of the patient to hospital admission. In essence, they would act as a resource for all staff responding to trauma activations at PCMC. This new role for the ED nurse at PCMC was called the Trauma Charge Nurse (TCN).
