Over the last century there have been remarkable improvements in health. In particular, wealthy countries have advanced maternal health and positive outcomes of pregnancy with specific prenatal and medical interventions, such as monitoring the fetus for risk of asphyxia before and during birth, the use of antibiotics for infection, blood transfusions for hemorrhage, trained personnel for obstetric services including safe Cesarean section, and mechanical ventilation for newborns. Society has been engaged to invest in health so that women and mothers can be and stay healthy, so that medical complications can be identified early and evidence-based interventions applied to prevent the consequences of these conditions, and so that appropriate medical care for women and infants can be provided at health care facilities.
