The olfactory and taste behavioral responses to free amino acids and to extract of chironomid larvae in minnow Phoxinus phoxinus are investigated under normal conditions and after a prolonged period of olfactory deprivation (12-14 months). Bchaviorally efficient amino acids causing an feeding response in the taste and olfactory sensory systems are revealed. Minnows manifest a taste preference to four of 21 amino acids, namely, to proline, glutamine, alanine, and valine. Three amino acids, histidine, arginine, and phcnylalanine, were deterrent. The attitude of the fishes to the taste of 14 other amino acids and to four classical taste substances was indifferent. Solutions of six of nine animo acids used for tests at a concentration of 10~(-4)M caused searching behavior in fishes with intact olfaction. Alanine was the most efficient. Solutions of glutamine, histidine, and valine did not stimulate any response. Chronically anosmiated minnows manifested a clear searching response to solutions of fourof nine amino acids. The action of alanine and proline was the most efficient. Comparison of ranges of taste responses of tishes to pellets with amino acids and of feeding behavior responses to solutions of the same amino acids in minnows with intael and resected olfactory organs revealed a significant positive relationship only in responses of anosmiated fishes to solutions and of intact fishes to pellets. This is indicative of participation of a gustatory reception in the sensory background of the searching response to solutions of feeding chemical stimuli in fishes with a prolonged loss of olfactory function.
