Phytophthora blight is the most devastating disease of peppers but can be managed with an integrated program that includes avoiding pathogen introduction to a field, managing soil moisture, planting resistant varieties and applying fungicides. Managing soil moisture is the most critical component of the program. So said Margaret Tuttle McGrath, Riverhead, N.Y., an associate professor with the Department of Plant Pathology, Long Island Horticultural Research and Extension Center, Cornell University.McGrath was a participant in the 2002 New York State Vegetable Conference tomatoes, peppers and eggplant session, held earlier this year in Liverpool, N.Y.
