摘要

As researchers in plant technology learn more about how plant diseases work, more and more growers are moving away from scheduled fungicide applications to "as needed" treatments. Tomato growers in New Jersey are no exception. A small group of processing growers is taking advantage of a disease-forecasting model developed by the Rutgers Cooperative Extension. Today, they no longer have to use a scheduled, calendar-based method to determine when to protect their crops. In New Jersey, the major reasonfor fungicide protection is early blight, caused by the fungus Alternaria solani. Other applications are required to prevent fruit rot, caused by Colletotrichum coccobes.
