Review of Sintering Process Development for Nd-Fe-B

Recent studies of the effects of various additive elements in the sintered Nd-Fe-B permanent magnet are reviewed. Since the first appearance of this magnet, Dy and Al have been necessary additives to give enough coercivity for practical use. Several researchers have proposed refractory elements such as Nb, Mo, and Ti as additives in the magnets to increase the coercivity, but the effect has been modest. We have found that a large vanadium (V) addition is very effective to increase coercivity if the B content is close to x + 4 where x is V content in atomic percent. The Nd-Fe-Co-V-B magnets show excellent corrosion resistance in addition to very high stability in magnetic properties at elevated temperatures.
