Wheat grains were used as a substrate to raise the spawn of five different strains each of Pleurotus florida and Pleurotus sajor-caju to assess their spawn development period and morphological characteristics in relation to their parental checks under laboratory conditions. The spawn development period varied from 10 to 17.7 d for P. florida strains while it was 9.7 to 18.3 d for P. sajor-caju strains. The minimum spawn development period of 10.0 d was recorded for strain Pf 3 of P. florida and 9.7 d for strain Psc 4 of P. sajor-caju compared to 14.3 d and 15.0 d for their parental checks, respectively. The pileus length and width, stalk length and width and average weight of carpophores were significantly less in all the five strains of P. florida as compared to the check. Similarly, in P. sajor-caju pileus and stalk dimensions in all the strains were though better than check but the weight of carpophores was less than the parental check.
