摘要

Prescription monitoring programs (PMPs) can be effective tools in our efforts to identify prescription drug misuse and abuse. These programs provide rapid access to information on which monitored drugs are prescribed for individual patients, by whom, and when. Some PMPs also indicate at which pharmacies the prescriptions were filled. Thus, PMPs can help clinicians identify not only what drugs have been prescribed for their patients, but when the patients are using multiple prescribers ("doctor shopping") or pharmacies ("pharmacy shopping"). PMPs have been used to monitor many classes of drugs; opioids and other controlled substances are the most common types of medications monitored through PMPs.
