This month's Journal Club will focus on three articles published recently in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS). The first deals with the role of Epstein-Barr virus in the pathogenesis of MS. Don Gilden and co-workers performed a state-of-the-art study, which shows that Epstein-Barr virus is most likely not directly or indirectly involved in the pathogenesis of MS because they did not find any evidence of active Epstein-Barr virus infection. The second article, with a rather misleading title but interesting findings, demonstrates that high field (9.4 T) magnetic resonance imaging reveals changes in cortical grey matter lesions in multiple sclerosis; this, however, was a study on tissue samples and not an in vivo study. The final article gives some preliminary evidence that ibudilast, a phos-phodiesterase inhibitor, might have a neuroprotective effect in MS; the conclusion drawn by the authors is, however, speculative.
