We write in response to the recent editorial by Professor Erich Saling, the founding editor of the Journal of Perinatal Medicine, entitled ' 'ProfSlems in prevention of preterm birth - regrettable contradictions" [3]. Professor Saling points out that although substantial progress has taken place in perinatal medicine during the past 50 years, preterm birth remains a global problem of major proportions. There are approximately 13 million preterm births per year worldwide and over 1 million infant deaths as a result of prematurity [1]. Prevention of this massive public health problem has been elusive.
