The MEC symposia have run since the 1970s and have represented some of the best and latest in upper limb prosthetics research. As the profession has grown, MEC has grown with it, changing and evolving as the area has responded to new ideas and technologies. In the summer of 2011, the symposium was once again held in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada. The audience was treated to some of the most important developments in technology seen in many years. However, prosthetics is a practical discipline, and thus, the attendees were also able to learn more about some of the simpler and practical solutions to problems in the routine fitting of prosthetic arms, especially some focused at the more disadvantaged countries of the world. This edition of the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics has tried to capture a flavor of the event with a selection of just a few of the very interesting papers presented in Fredericton.
