摘要

Japanese poetry of haiku and tanka are well-established forms of poetry internationally. The format and style of 72 Seasonal Spells are less known in the West. A Renku Master Shokan Tadashi Kondo lectured about them in a Haiku Conference in Sweden. While preparing his presentation he provided a copy of his 72 Spells in Tokyo to a colleague in Washington, DC, who lives her summers in Finland. She was greatly inspired by this new form of Japanese poetry and decided to try it, but in a shorter time span, just to cover the summer in Virtasalmi. The 72 Seasonal Spells is a form of poetic self-expression that could be used successfully in poetry therapy. The classic 72 Seasonal Spells cover nature observation for an entire year, but could be used for a shorter period. It could be useful format for poetry therapy, because it provides therapeutic boundaries, does not require previous poetry writing experience, and offers subtle insight in the symbolic or metaphoric content imbedded in the chosen observation.
