Rarely do we have eureka moments in our lives that give us grand insights into how the world works. But most of us have experiences that direct or redirect our interests for years to come. In my case, being treated for prostate cancer propelled me—a scientist who has studied tadpoles throughout most of his professional life—into studying how androgens and estrogens affect human sex drive, mood, and gender identity.
