THE PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES QUESTIONNAIRE (PAQ; Spence, Helmreich, & Slapp, 1975) and the Bern Sex Role Inventory (BSRI; Bern, 1974) are two popular measures of sex role orientation in psychology and related disciplines. The labeling of constructs assessed by these two instruments seems to vary between (a) masculinity and femininity (Bern, 1981) and (b) instrumentality and expressiveness (Spence, 1991). Despite the difference in terminology, empirical evidence demonstrates that both instruments appear to measure the same-or quite similarconstructs. In general, there are moderate-to-strong correlations between scores that researchers have obtained from the two Masculinity (M) subscales and the two Femininity (F) subscales of the PAQ and the BSRI with coefficients ranging from .52 to .84 (see Lubinski, Tellegen, & Butcher, 1983; Spence, 1991).
