Previous columns have described computerized physician order entry (CPOE) and evidence-based clinical decision support (EBCDS) embedded in referring physician workflow as necessary tools to improve the appropriateness of test ordering [1]. Federally funded initiatives are accelerating the adoption and meaningful use of IT (including CPOE and EBCDS) to enable health care reform by improving quality and reducing waste [2]. CMS has launched the Medicare Imaging Demonstration to assess the impact of clinical decision support on the basis of predetermined professional society guidelines on targeted high-cost imaging studies in Medicare fee-for-ser-vice patients [3]. The growing footprint of CPOE and clinical decision support for radiology will create new opportunities and challenges for our specialty. We describe some of these opportunities and challenges for further enhancing the value of radiologists in enabling a high-quality evidence-based practice.
